DUBAI HEALTH AUTHORITY

I have been working as Consultant Haematopathologist on a special contract in the various health facilities of Dubai Health Authority (DHA), covering Dubai Hospital till end of February 2009, but also Dubai Blood Donor Center and other hospital after that.

In BDC I was given the task of developing the Center to prepare it for accreditation by AABB (which was achieved in March 2012) and develop it to become Blood Transfusion Service for Dubai.

KING FAHD ARMED FORCES HOSPITAL- JEDDAH

This 240-bed Hospital (now 450 beds) is a very busy and advanced referral hospital for the Saudi Army in the Western Province. It has a very active cardiac surgery department and renal transplant unit.

The Laboratory is up-to-date and uses most advanced technologies.

Haematology Laboratory is busy and does an average of 300 counts a day with automated coagulation that supports haematology-oncology and anticoagulant clinics, totaling 5 per week. All coagulation factors, thrombophilia investigation and platelet function tests are performed. Haemoglobinopathies investigation is advanced and serves a population with high incidence of such diseases..

The Hospital Blood Bank has its own Donation Centre as well as an Apheresis Unit. There is a Hospital Blood transfusion Committee and the Blood bank follows AABB practices and policies.

I am in charge of both Divisions, as well as Flow Cytometry Laboratory. In addition to working as haematopathologist, I run an anticoagulant clinic and cover clinical haematology in the absence of the consultant clinical haematologist.

Our lab is being prepared for accreditation by CAP and AABB.

RIYADH ARMED FORCES HOSPITAL (RKH)

This is the main Army Hospital in Saudi Arabia. A 700 bed hospital at the time, it is one of the best hospitals in the Middle East. It is a teaching hospital and a main training hospital for medical interns, junior medical staff and technologists of all grades.

The Haematology Laboratory is a very busy one (about 450 specimens a day. All routine and special haematology tests are carried out, including coagulation factor assays and platelet function. It used to run QC programmes for many hospitals in the Kingdom and neighbouring countries.

Blood Bank section has a busy donor area ( 35 donors a day), in addition to an active programme of haemapheresis, therapeutic and donor. Blood components are prepared and a frozen blood service was also run.

HLA section of the lab is very active, supporting renal, cardiac, liver and bone marrow transplant services, in addition to performing routine tests.

Haematology Department also looks after patients with haematologic disorders, including adult acute leukemia. On starting this section in 1983, we had beds in general medicine wards. In 1988 we opened our own unit (Haematology and Bone Marrow Transplant Unit) with 16 beds, including 4 isolation rooms. Bone Marrow Transplantation Programme started in January 1989.

Haematologists were fully involved in the management of haematologic problems in patients under care of other disciplines. This activity included oral anticoagulation monitoring for in- and outpatients. There were more than 350 such patients in 1988. We ran two big anticoagulant clinics a week, as well as two haematology clinics. Haematologists also advised on blood and component therapy.

My role in the Department was to carry out the lab and clinical duties, as well as administrative. I had a second consultant, one senior registrar, two registrars and two residents in the Unit. In the lab there were 30 technical staff, three nurses(Blood Bank) and 12 phlebotomists. The ward had 24 nurses.

The laboratory was recognized for training by the Royal College of Pathologists, UK and the Royal College of Pathologists of Australia and New Zealand.

We were involved in many research projects and advanced many papers to Medical Conferences and Symposia.

HAMAD MEDICAL CORPORATION

This tertiary care hospital of Qatar is a 1000-bed facility comprising Hamad general Hospital, Women Hospital and Rumaila Hospital.

The Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology serves all three Hospitals and is the reference laboratory for all other labs in the State of Qatar. It is a modern facility that is very well equipped.

Haematology laboratory is very busy and performs around 500 blood counts a day. It has a fully automated coagulation section . There was a registrar and two residents to help the consultant. Teaching is very active for both medical and technical staff. The students of Applied Medical Sciences are taught theory and practical in this laboratory, both in Haematology and Blood Bank subjects.

Bone Marrow transplantation was in its final preparatory stage and Autologous peripheral blood stem cell transplantation was being carried out during my last year there. Harvesting and testing is all done in its Blood Bank.

The Blood bank also serves as Blood transfusion Centre for the State of Qatar. Apheresis Programme is very active in patient management and component procurement from donors. The laboratory is accredited by the Royal College of Pathologists, UK, for Part I examination.

KING FAHAD NATIONAL GUARD HOSPITAL- RIYADH

This tertiary care hospital for the entire Saudi National Guard was 520-bed at the time.. Its laboratory is excellent and fully equipped. It is accredited by JCAHO and the laboratory is accredited by CAP and AABB..

Haematology laboratory is fully automated and processed an average of 300 CBC’s a day. It runs on 3-shift basis and includes a coagulation laboratory. I served there as head of Haematology Division, Deputy Director of Blood Bank Division and Directory of Cytogenetics and HLA Laboratories. I was in charge of Medical Education in the Department and the Hospital Coordinator of the Fellowship Programme in Pathology, run by the University. Four Hospitals in Riyadh participated in that Programme. I also represented the Hospital in the haematology Subcommittee of the Programme.

I ran anticoagulant clinic in the last year I spent in this hospital.

AL-RASHEED MILITARY HOSPITAL- BAGHDAD

This was the main Army Hospital of Iraq, with 800 beds. The Haematology Department there included Central Iraqi Army Blood bank. Its laboratory was also the referral lab for other military hospitals. Teaching and training activities were carried out in the department for military doctors and laboratory technicians. Clinical consultations on haematology cases and haematologic problems in other patients were sought from the haematologist but I did not have beds and admission facilities of my own.

MEDICAL CITY TEACHING HOSPITAL- BAGHDAD

This the teaching hospital of the College of Medicine with its teaching laboratories. The labs are very busy and involved in routine work, teaching and training. Run partly by the Medical College and partly by the Ministry of Health, the laboratory trained Medical Students (Clinical Pathology for 5^th year students), was fully responsible for the haematology module of the postgraduate course leading to the Diploma in Clinical Pathology for physicians. Also, courses for Science College graduates in clinical analysis (1 year) were regularly run to graduate scientific officers for all the country’s laboratories.

Haematology at first did not have its own beds, but haematologists were consulted about haemtology cases and participated actively in the management of such cases. From 1975 and on, a Haematology Unit was established and it had its own beds and outpatient clinics. In the Unit, clinical and laboratory haematologists collaborated to carry out management and follow up of patients.

CENTRAL PUBLIC HEALTH LABORATORIES- BAGHDAD

These were, at the time, the referral laboratories for the MOH hospitals of Iraq, for Quality Control, methodology selection, training of pathology junior medical staff and technologists, in addition to refresher courses. I was in charge of the haematology Division of the Laboratories and carried out all the activities in the specialty.

AL-BASHEER HOSPITAL- AMMAN, JORDAN

This is the main Hospital of the MOH of Jordan. It was a 500-bed facility. The hospital and laboratories were the training institutes for junior doctors, interns, and lab technicians.

I was the medical director of those laboratories and in charge of the haematology routine.

DUBAI HOSPITAL- DUBAI, UNITED ARAB EMIRATES

This is a 350-bed hospital, accredited by the JCIA International. Its laboratory is an advanced one with full haematology function as well as Flowcytometry for all Dubai Government hospitals. Here I was the director of Haematology and Blood Bank divisions. I also covered the other two Government Hospitals in Dubai during absence of their respective hematopathologists.

The laboratory is very busy 3-shift one and is fully computerized.

DUBAI BLOOD DONATION CENTER

The only center in Dubai Emirate, which collects more than 35000 units of blood every year, in addition to aphaeresis platelet collection for all government and private hospitals in Dubai. I function as medical director for the center, in addition to my duties as a consultant hematopathologist.
